Michaël Borremans (*1963) is a Belgian artist. In 1996, he received his M.F.A. from Hogeschool voor Wetenschap en Kunst, Campus St. Lucas, in Ghent. Lives and works in Gent (Belgium)
His painting technique recalls classical painting, Borremans cites the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) as an important influence.
Behind a veil of stylistic perfection, the artist simulates common rituals of interpretation and meaning. His images involve political and psychological patterns of perceiving the world, which oscillate in a camouflaging, fragile way between uncompromising realism and hazy distance.

The exhibition features different scale paintings feature anonymous, black-robed characters.
Alone or in groups, they perform mysterious acts within monochromatic spaces contrasts between light and dark areas, Their facelessness and the lack of context or details opens up ambiguous narrative possibilities. The secrecy may signify the bleak junction within today’s society of faith, morality, and politics, but can also be seen to emphasize the ritualistic nature of human life across centuries and cultures
