ibug 2025 - festival for urban art in the cultural capital chemnitz | Friendly supported by iriedaily
Twenty years, an anniversary and a new location: The ibug has long been one of the most exciting urban art festivals in Europe - and in 2025, it will be setting up camp in the former hospital at Scheffelstraße 110 in Chemnitz. International street art now meets Saxon history where operations, care and healing used to take place. As has been the case for many years, friendly support from IRIEDAILY!
The Brownfield redevelopment is once again transforming an abandoned area into a temporary art mecca - this time as part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 program. Three buildings, a shelter and an overgrown inner courtyard will become a playground for creative people from all over the world: 70 artists, duos and crews from 25 countries design the site with murals, paste-ups, installations and multimedia works. The artists include Isakov & Krashkid, Chinagirl Tile, Yubia, Tschief and Adhocrates, who are reinterpreting an old Auto-Union workshop with found objects for the "flow/resistance" project.
After two weeks of full-on creative chaos, the site opens its doors to the public across three late-summer weekends: August 22–24, August 29–31, and September 5–7, 2025. Expect art all day – with tours, talks and workshops – and laid-back beer garden vibes or banging live sets at night. DJs like Tony Johnson, Rena Volvo, and Goldie Palm will be on deck, alongside live acts like Searching for Home, Oh No Noh, and JPD..

LOST PLACE WITH PAST: Chemnitz Stadtpark Hospital
The festival site itself is full of history: originally built in the early 1900s as the Presto-Werke and later used by Auto-Union, the complex was turned into the “Krankenhaus Stadtpark” after WWII. It shut down in 1997 – and now, almost 30 years later, new life is moving into the old walls.

IMPRESSIONS OF THE LAST YEARS

Chemnitz 2025 - European Capital of Culture
In 2025, Chemnitz steps into the spotlight as European Capital of Culture. Together with 38 towns and communities from the Erzgebirge, Zwickau area and Central Saxony, the region invites you on a cultural deep dive into the heart of eastern Germany.
Under the motto “C the Unseen”, the focus is on making the hidden visible – stories, places and people that have flown under the radar finally get their moment. From street art to theater, music to crafts, industrial heritage to future visions – it’s all about connecting the past and present with fresh ideas and creative minds.
The program kicks off in January and runs all year long: exhibitions, concerts, performances, food, sports, workshops and more – often happening in off-the-map spots like abandoned factories, overgrown parks or old buildings you’d never expect. These are the places of making, and they’re where the magic happens.
Chemnitz in 2025 is raw, real, and ready for change – and that’s exactly what makes it exciting.
